A brief biography of Charles Tart:
Charles T. Tart, Ph.D.,  is internationally known for his psychological work on the nature of consciousness, particularly altered states of consciousness - as one of the founders of the field of transpersonal psychology - and for his research in parapsychology. His two classic books, "Altered States of Consciousness" (1969) and "Transpersonal Psychologies" (1975), were widely used texts that were instrumental in allowing these areas to become part of modern psychology.

And Charley's description of his presentation:
Charley Tart and his wife Judy joined Ashby Village a year ago.  Charley is an emeritus UC Davis psychology professor.  He has centered his research about mind and consciousness, its nature, variations and applications for more than half a century, starting with research on nighttime dreams, hypnosis and psychedelic drugs and, over the years, expanding into meditation, parapsychology, what the essence of scientific method is, and transcendent experiences.  His 1969 anthology Altered States of Consciousness was an important factor in stimulating psychology to studying consciousness after Behaviorism has pretty much ignored it for decades, and his 1975 Transpersonal Psychologies, making the psychology inherent in various spiritual systems more open to the Western mind, made him one of the founders of the young field of Transpersonal Psychology.   The results of some of his experimental work at UCD were important in how US intelligence agencies employed the mind’s psychic functioning during the Cold War.  An informal person, Charley will spend a few minutes sharing his current working model of consciousness and altered states of consciousness, and then will share information and ideas on any of these areas that people in the science group want to ask about.  Many of his published articles are available at www.paradigm-sys.com and he has numerous informal essays on these various topics at www.blog.paradigm-sys.com.
