The Ashby Village Exploring Creativity Group Presents:
Troy Duster and Russ Ellis: A Conversation Exploring Creativity

Are you curious about what happens when a couple of distinguished academic colleagues decide to do something completely different and unexpected in their retirement?

On Sunday, March 21st, from 1:00-3:00, you’ll have a rare opportunity to witness a virtual conversation between Troy Duster and Russ Ellis about the remarkable creative work they undertook during and after they left the academic world. Troy and Russ are two former UC Berkeley colleagues, old friends and Ashby Village members whom you may have heard speak at other Ashby Village events.

What have each of them been doing since they left the hallowed halls of academia that they have found immensely satisfying? How is their creative work different from their long professional careers? What inspires them? What happens during their creative process? You’ll have a chance to see and hear examples of Troy and Russ’ artistic work and hear personal anecdotes and reflections about their creative lives.

Troy Duster is Emeritus Chancellor’s Professor at UC Berkeley, where he taught for over four decades, and served as Director of the Institute for the Study of Social Change. Born and raised on Chicago’s Southside, he received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northwestern University. In its early stages, he chaired the Human Genome Project’s National Advisory Committee on Ethical, Legal and Social Issues. He began working on ceramics in the 1960s, and for many years had his own kiln in his backyard. In recent years, he has shifted over from stoneware and works mainly with porcelain, and fires his work at the Berkeley Potter’s Studio.

William R. (Russ) Ellis is Emeritus Professor of Architecture and Emeritus Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at U. C. Berkeley. Russ was born in California, attended Compton High School and UCLA for his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Russ retired from Cal in 1994 and took up sculpting, then painting, and more recently, returned to singing-- this time songs of his own composition. Russ is a founding member of Ashby Village.

NOTE: Although this webinar will officially begin at 1:00, participants are encouraged to join the session beginning at 12:50 if they wish to hear a recent Russ Ellis recording of an original song, followed by a performance by Russ recorded in 1958.

Advance registration is highly advised, since Zoom capacity will be limited. Please RSVP as soon as possible to info@ashbyvillage.org.

Although this event is FREE for all to attend, Ashby Village relies on donations in order to bring programs such as this to our members and friends.
