Music Appreciation: Listening Guide to Classical Music

For our classical music lovers – but not only…

 

Soprano Jumi Kim, designed a course for Ashby Village members interested in classical music that will feature a brief lecture accompanied by a description of the repertoire to be performed by Jumi or other guest artists. Every month she will present a different topic/composer.

: Celeste Solo Ensemble Virtual Summertime Concert

Celeste Solo Ensemble is back with enchanting classical music this summer. The program will include “Summertime” from Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess, Liszt’s piano transcription of Schumann’s “Widmung,” and Elgar’s romantic violin solo, Salut D’Amour.



Biography of Jumi Kim, Soprano


Jumi Kim, soprano, has been a featured soloist at concerts, including Messiah with the Ball State Symphony Orchestra and in Hodie by Vaughn Willams with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra.  Her recent performances include, Mozart Requiem and Coronation Mass, and Vivaldi Gloria with Santa Ynez Master Chorale and Orchestra, Bach Church Cantata BWV51 and Bach Magnificat with Symphony of the Vines, Pergolesi Stabat Mater with Brillante Chamber Ensemble on the Central Coast. She also appeared as a guest artist at various concerts with Music Untold in Los Angeles and Washington D.C.


Ms. Kim joined Opera SLO in the role of high priestess for their 2014 production of Aida and returned to perform the role of Lola from Cavalleria Rusticana in 2015. During her studies she performed various operatic roles including Suzel in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Countess in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Cio-Cio San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.


Ms. Kim taught at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo as a voice instructor for six years prior to moving to the Napa Valley area. She previously taught voice at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion and IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne). Ms. Kim received her doctoral degree in vocal performance from Ball State University, received her master’s from Indiana University, and her bachelor’s degree from Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, Korea. Biography of Hyunji Park, piano


Hyunji Park, native of Seoul, Korea, holds a Graduate Performance Diploma in piano performance from Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She has over 20 years of professional musical experience as a soloist, collaborative performer, music educator, choir conductor, arranger and a director of music organizations.


As an active pianist, Hyunji has appeared as a soloist and a collaborative pianist in Seoul, Rome, the Opera House in Sydney, Baltimore-Washington D.C., the Herbst Theater and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and the Bay Area. She also has served communities by performing in numerous benefit concerts and coordinating music classes for special education at Younhee Paik’s Stuido for Art & Music in Oakland, CA. Ms. Park always projects missions through the music to get closer to the people who love music and healing the communities.


As an Educator, she worked as a music director of the 2015-2018 Sonata Contest of CCMTAC. Hyunji has a thriving Studio and her students are on the top lists of the major piano competitions in the Bay Area. Currently, she is a music director of Canaan KUMC and artistic director of Celeste Solo Ensemble.



Biography of Seo Hee Byun, violin


As a recipient of the Peabody Merit Scholarship, Seo Hee Byun earned her Bachelors and Master of Music at the Peabody Conservatory of Music of The Johns Hopkins University under Pamela Frank. She then continued her studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a full tuition scholarship recipient and received her Doctorate of Musical Arts. During her studies, she was a concertmaster for the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra and led the New Music Ensemble and Sinfonia da Camera. Beyond her school years, she was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. During this time in Chicago, she performed with great figures in music including maestro Ricardo Mutti and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.


Originally from Seoul, Korea, as a soloist, Seo Hee has performed with the Seoul Academy Symphony and Kang-Nam Symphony when she was a teenager. Also, she was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall as the winner of the American Protégé Competition in the String and Piano Division, as well as the Concerto Division. Previously, she won the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Concerto Competition and was a finalist of the 2009 Yokohama International Music Competition, California International Young Artists Competition and Atlantic Symphony Competition. For the past decade, she has appeared as a violinist with Sonnet Ensemble, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, TongYeong International Music Festival Orchestra, Seoul Chamber Ensemble, performing with various great artists in the world.


Her experiences not only span across a wide range of performances for both solo and ensemble but also include teaching for the new generation. In the past, she served as the faculty of professional arts high schools, international school and university in Korea. In addition, she taught at The King’s Academy, Monarch Christian School located in the Bay Area. Currently, Seo Hee is a substitute violin member of San Francisco Ballet and Symphony Silicon Valley. While she is building her own studio in San Jose, she also coaches Bay Area Youth Music Association Orchestra.
