NIMITZ TRAIL, INSPIRATION POINT-TILDEN PARK
Description: This out and back walk is rated an "Easy" 3 mi - 213 ft elevation gain and a great walk for gorgeous views of the Bay, as well as points East. Paved and wide trail. Full sun and benches along the way. 1.5 mi each way can be shortened as needed. We are attempting an afternoon hike on a Thursday due to popular choice. Please bring water (no drinking fountains), and sun protection. Benches to rest and turn-around as needed. We hope to have sufficient walk leaders to accommodate various distance/speed abilities.
Nimitz Trail is a relatively level walk on a paved fire road. The old road was built in the 1950s to access a Nike missile installation, which runs along San Pablo Ridge. It offers views of both San Francisco Bay and inland valleys, both quite beautiful. This trail actually goes all the way to Wildcat Regional Park with groves of trees and open spaces.
Where to meet: We will meet at Inspiration Point in Tilden Regional Park on Wildcat Canyon Rd. Arrive at Inspiration Point Staging area and go to the left, towards the restrooms. There is an asphalt parking lot with accessible parking spaces. Please be prompt allowing for driving and parking time!
What to bring: Binoculars if you have them, good hiking shoes or boots for the trails, layered clothing for variable weather, water, sun protection and windbreaker, snacks. Hiking poles are optional, but lots of us depend upon them for balance and to avoid slippage on slopes, and an extra work out!
Directions: From North Berkeley take Spruce St to top; cross the intersection with Grizzly Peak Blvd and go directly across to Wildcat Canyon Road. Follow this road about 3 winding miles to Inspiration Point.
Nav setting: Inspiration Point parking lot, Wildcat Canyon Rd., Orinda, CA
Transportation: Need a ride? Members can request a ride from the Ashby Village for a volunteer driver who can join us. Or have a family member or guest bring you, and join you on the walk.
