Joy Totah Hilden, Ashby Village member, will present a slide program on Bedouin Weaving, a subject about which she is an authority. Joy lived and traveled in Saudi Arabia for twelve years, visiting the Bedouin and doing primary research there and in neighboring countries. She will show examples of Bedouin weaving, the weavers at work, and their families.
Joy and her husband, Robert Hilden, a university teacher, lived in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia from 1982 - 1994. Her travels and research acquainted her with Bedouin culture, which is fast disappearing. The beautiful and functional hand-woven pieces are the last of their kind, since the Bedouin are giving up their nomadic ways, giving up their tents and living in concrete houses. You will see the changes taking place in their lifestyle and weaving and observe them at work.
Joy is the author of Bedouin Weaving of Saudi Arabia and its Neighbours. More information
