Who We Are

Ashby Village is a community of older adult members and five generations of volunteers who live in Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Kensington, Oakland, and Richmond. Together with staff and Board members, we “villagers” are inspired by the neighborly practice of helping each other navigate life’s curves to make aging a little bit easier, less lonely, and more enjoyable. Mutual care and reciprocity are at the heart of everything we do.

Since our founding in 2010, members and volunteers have co-created a caring and vibrant community inspired by their interests, talents and needs. Social, educational, and cultural events; neighborhood group activities; support group meetings; and interest group gatherings keep us connected, supported, informed and entertained! Many events are offered free to the community — such as Arts & Culture and Health & Wellness presentations, and our lively monthly Social Hours — and villagers are encouraged to bring family, friends, and neighbors!

A Bit of History

After many discussions and community meetings that began in 2007, Ashby Village launched in 2010, connecting older adults in Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Kensington, and parts of Oakland. In December 2019, our community expanded to include neighbors in Richmond, and in July 2020, we welcomed our North Oakland Village friends as our villages merged.

Ashby Village is part of the National Village Movement and Village Movement California (VMC). The Movement emerged as a natural answer to the question many older adults face: how can I remain in my home as I age? A Village is a membership organization that connects older adults to the community, programming, and expertise they need to continue living lives of purpose and promise. This innovative, community-based solution improves quality of life and expands choices at all stages of aging, empowering older adults to sustain independence and remain in charge of their lives.
