Kitty Sklar and Tom Dublin will speak about their work during the past twenty years of creating three online databases in Women's History, collectively comprising over 400,000 pages of primary sources -- "Women and Social Movements in the United States, since 1600," (an online journal as well as a database); "Women and Social Movements International, since 1840," and "Women and Social Movements in Modern Empires since 1820," available by subscription at about 500 academic libraries. Kitty Sklar will briefly introduce the three databases. Tom Dublin will speak about creating "The Online Biographical Dictionary of the Women's Suffrage Movement in the United States, 1830 to 1960," which will be complete in 2020 to celebrate the centennial of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Kitty Sklar (Kathryn Kish Sklar) has taught U.S. history (with an emphasis on women and social movements and international comparisons) at the University of Michigan, UCLA, SUNY Binghamton and the University of Oxford. She is the author of several books and articles and is now writing a history of the social origins of minimum wage, 1880-1940. She and Tom moved to Berkeley seven years ago to be closer to children and grandchildren. Their website is http://chswg.binghamton.edu/.
Thomas Dublin taught U.S. History at the University of California San Diego and the State University of New York at Binghamton and is the author or editor of eight books exploring U.S. women’s history and labor history. For two decades he co-edited with Kitty Sklar the online journal and database, WOMEN AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES. Currently he is constructing an online database, the ONLINE BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF THE WOMAN SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES. For this project he is orchestrating the crowdsourcing by volunteers of 3,000 biographical sketches of grassroots women’s suffrage activists.
