Documentary Film Discussion Group -
Stories We Tell
(1 hour 58 minutes)
“Stories We Tell”: In this fascinating film, Sarah Polley, Oscar nominated director, plays with the documentary format to explore the nature of memory and storytelling, crafting a thoughtful, compassionate narrative that unfolds like a mystery. Her film is constantly surprising, surprises of fact and surprises of how the film is structured. Sarah’s mother, Diane Polley, died when Sarah was 11. Polley calls her interview subjects, the family and other important figures in her mother’s past, Storytellers. The question of how to make the film and how to understand her mother’s life are entwined. Secrets revealed are never just one thing, they deepen as each Storyteller shows us different layers of meaning.
Please do remember that you will be viewing this film on your own.
The film is available on Kanopy free with a library card and on Amazon Prime for $3.99
