About this event
Lake Temescal Loop Walk - 1 PM - flat & easy for all skill levels, with a more challenging Secret Staircase walk option
RSVP: to Jeanette Ward 650-954-7476 (cell/text) or jbwardhmb@gmail.com or Members and volunteers may self register.
WHEN: Mon. Feb. 14, 1 PM for approx. 2 hours (may be a bit later for Secret Stairs option)
WHERE: Park to meet at the Broadway Terrace parking lot, also referred to as the South Gate Staging Area (parking lot). The $5 fee is usually not collected on weekdays, but come prepared. You may also find parking in the residential neighborhood above the park entrance around 6450 Broadway Terrace (there is a path down to the parking lot with some slope decline hopefully not muddy); especially convenient, if you are opting for the hidden staircase walk addition.
DESCRIPTION: Lake Temescal Loop is a 1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail that is flat and easy and great for all skill levels. It is a lovely walk with benches and restrooms. The easier walk will start and end at the Broadway Terrace parking lot. Depending on walk pace, the loop might only take an hour.
For those who would like a little more adventure and can handle some incline and stairs, we will continue from the Broadway Terrace end of the Lake and traverse the ridges of Upper Rockridge (starting near 6450 Broadway Terrace), surveying the historic homes that survived the 1991 fires and the newer ones replacing the homes that didn’t. There are lovely views along the way and a fun challenge to find the secret stairs. Following the map on this page, we will follow the Secret Stairs East Bay Walk #31 (author Charles Fleming). Copies of the narrative description will be provided. While the total distance of the stair walk is 2.4 miles, we may opt to do just a bit of it, and save the whole walk for another day (Or you can do it on your own with the map and guide.) We will have walk leaders to accommodate pace and walk options.
WHAT TO BRING:Dress in layers, bring hat, water, and snack. Some walkers like to have walking poles for balance and stability. Bring your cell phone, if you have one.
TRANSPORTATION: The Lake is near the intersection of Hwys 24 and 13 in Oakland. 6502 Broadway Terrace is the navigational coordinates for the Temescal Regional Recreation Area South Gate Staging Area, Oakland. Go south on Hwy 13 and exit right on Broadway Terrace immediately after passing under Hwy 24. Then take the first right into the park.
Members who need a ride can contact the office for a volunteer driver, who may join us or you may ask a friend to bring you and be your guest, as well.
COVID PRECAUTIONS: Masks are optional, If you are vaccinated. If you are not vaccinated you must wear a mask.
Rain cancels: If we are rained out, we will try to reschedule.
