The Inspiring Transformation of Colombia
At a time when much international news is alarming, we can take courage from the amazing story of Colombia. In less than a generation it has managed to transform itself from a dangerous and lawless country to what it is today: safe, democratic, and verging on real prosperity.
In December, Ashby Village member and volunteer Joan Straumanis traveled there with the purpose of learning how such an evolution was possible. It's a complicated story with many moving parts. Joan will share the highlights of her trip and encourage you to visit this beautiful and welcoming South American oasis of good news.
Bio: Joan Straumanis has been a high school teacher, college professor, dean at three colleges and president of two (Antioch College in Ohio and the Metropolitan College of New York in Manhattan). She has also served as a program director at two Federal agencies, the U.S. Department of Education (FIPSE: the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education), and the National Science Foundation, where she managed basic research in neuroscience and learning. Today she works as a fundraiser for Antioch College.
She was a founder of women's studies as an academic discipline, and pioneered legislation protecting sexual assault counselors and victims. She has served on four national boards accrediting education in the health professions.
Joan has three children and four grandchildren, and lives in Oakland. At Ashby Village she's a member and volunteer, the leader of the Outreach Team--the group responsible for recruiting new members and volunteers.
