Science and Ideas Group Presents
Go home! It’s too dangerous here,
you’ll get killed!

Presenter: Charles Tart, Retired Professor Emeritus of psychology from UC Davis

Charles Tart's Altered States of Consciousness, a scientific bestseller, helped bring the study of consciousness back into a psychology that had neglected it in favor of behavior. Behavior can be studied usefully and pretty objectively but, of course, it left out all sorts of important experiences people have, such as those loosely called “psychic.”

Charley gave the Science and Ideas group a well received, but somewhat formal lecture about research on the psychic years ago. Supposedly “retired” at 86, and with more than 200 scientific papers published, he is bored with being formal and calculating statistics. He finds being a good storyteller more fun. There will be stories, beginning with a highly unusual personal experience on February 4, 1974, continuing with consulting work funded by the CIA and other government intelligence agencies, for which he needed a Top-Secret security clearance.  Charley welcomes questions and ideas so don’t worry, he won’t have to kill you after talking about some of these programs, declassified in the intervening years. The Remote Viewing technique that evolved from those programs was useful as well as raising deep questions about the nature of the human mind.

Charley will keep the formal beginning of his talk fairly short to allow plenty of time for questions. He has been one of the world’s leading parapsychologists in his career, as well as an authority in many related areas like altered states of consciousness, so here’s your chance to ask about that funny experience you had with someone who knows about these things.

Biography: Charles Tart, born in Pennsylvania on 4/29/1937,  is a renowned psychologist and consciousness researcher known for his contributions to transpersonal psychology and parapsychology. He obtained a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina, and focused on studying altered states of consciousness, including meditation and the use of psychedelics. Tart's work extended into parapsychology, where he conducted scientific experiments to explore and validate phenomena like ESP and telepathy. His writings and teachings have inspired many to explore their own consciousness and embrace a holistic perspective on human experience. Through his rigorous approach and open-mindedness, Tart has become an influential figure in the fields of psychology and parapsychology, expanding our understanding of consciousness and the human potential.
