Elder Action Climate Action Task Force
What Do You Mean I Can't Recycle That?
The Problem With Plastics
Ashby Village’s Elder Action group has invited Jessica Mitchell from the Berkeley Ecology Center to speak to us about THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTICS (a combined date for EA Climate Action and General Groups)
Jessica Mitchell is the Education and Engagement Program Manager at the Berkeley Ecology Center. She joined the center in 2021 where she supports the help desk and the BASIL seed library. Previously Jessica worked with non-profits in fields ranging from renewable energy, workforce development and legal aid. She holds a bachelor’s degree in urban and environmental policy from Occidental College.
WHY IS THIS PRESENTATION SO IMPORTANT? We have a huge plastics problem! The UN Environment Program estimates that 400 million metric tons of plastic waste is produced each year globally. The Ecology Center presentation will cover the basics of how to sort your waste, background on why there are few plastics that are recyclable, and what we can do about it as individuals and advocates. This talk will include a screening of the Alliance of Mission Based Recyclers’ (AMBR) video “Chasing Arrows: The Truth About Recycling.” which delves into the role of recycling in addressing the plastics crisis. Jessica will also discuss several initiatives that are currently attempting to address the plastic crisis at the local, state and national level.
Join us to hear the up to date answers to our recycling questions, share ideas about actions we can take individually and collectively and come away with new enthusiasm to make personal changes and support new laws and regulations to protect our planet.
Take action together to fight climate change! Join the Elder Action Climate Action Task Force.
We are a small but mighty group working to make sure our voices are heard as we educate ourselves and choose ways to save the future for ourselves, our children and grandchildren.
Feel free to invite others – you do not need to be a member of Ashby Village to become involved.
