Lauren Sandler: Ceramic Artist and Educator
Wherever she’s lived, Lauren Sandler considers the clay.
Now in Philadelphia, she’s Program Head of Ceramics at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art & Architecture with a current exhibit at the city’s airport. Rather than simply extract the clay just beneath the city’s surface, Sandler harvests clay from creeks, vacated lots and construction sites.
Clay is a layered and complex material. From paleolithic figurines to biomedical implants and the cup on your kitchen table, clay permeates our lives, offering us a unique chance to address a broad range of social, political, economic, racial, and environmental issues, culture, and power.
Join us to hear Lauren Sandler speak about her work as a nationally acclaimed ceramicist and contemporary and historic issues in ceramics.
We'll also have the opportunity to experience her artistry, as Sandler will share a selection of the clay vessels she has created.
Lauren Sandler is a ceramic artist, anthropologist and educator, based in Philadelphia, which sat atop a bed of high-quality brick clay just below the surface.
Her work examines the countless tales told by objects as a means to explore stories that have been erased, distorted, and rewritten.
Sandler exhibits nationally, and gives talks, workshops, and publishes work concerning contemporary and historic issues in ceramics. She is currently mounting an exhibit soon to appear in Philadelphia’s airport.
She holds an MFA in Ceramics from Penn State University, and undergraduate degrees in Anthropology and Ceramics from Ithaca College and SUNY New Paltz.
Sandler served on the Board of The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts as Director at Large and is currently Associate Professor and Program Head of Ceramics at Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University.
Rather than extract it, she works with her students to harvest and process local clay and build bricks for use in a community garden.
