A Philosopher's Take on the Abortion Debate
How to Think Like Philosopher about Abortion
Presenter: Joan Straumanis, PhD, Philosophy
Description of talk: A philosopher's advice about how to think respectfully and effectively about the various positions people take for and against abortion, including a persuasive critique of the "no abortion" stance of conservatives. On the other hand, some conventional pro-choice arguments are ineffective or unscientific. Whatever your views, you will come away with a new perspective, guaranteed!
Short biography: Joan Straumanis has been a high school teacher, college professor, dean at three colleges (Kenyon in Ohio, Rollins in Florida, Lehigh in Pennsylvania) and president of two (Antioch in Ohio, Metropolitan College of NY in Manhattan). She has also served as a program director at two Federal agencies, the U.S. Department of Education (FIPSE: the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education), and the National Science Foundation, where she managed basic research on neuroscience and learning.
She was a founder of women's studies as an academic discipline, and pioneered legislation protecting sexual assault counselors and victims.
