The HUGZ Band


Hailing from New York, LA, Buenos Aires and El Salvador, The HUGZ Band brings alive Spanish, Bossa Nova, North American folk, Cajun and Caribbean classics with a passion and distinctive ethnic flavor.  With three-part harmonies accompanied by guitars, mandolin, charango and bass, The HUGZ Band will take you on an unforgettable journey across the Americas. 


Michael DeWall
- Vocals, guitar.  Born in the US but raised in Buenos Aires, Michael studied guitar and sang often at school parties. At age 20, he moved back to the U.S, performing solo in cafes around the Bay Area. In 2016, he joined “Dr. Squeez and the HUGZ,” which eventually morphed into “The HUGZ Band.”  

Karen Chester - Vocals, mandolin, charango. Karen started off playing 1960’s folk music.  She joined La Peña Community Chorus over 25 years ago and continues to sing and play in that popular community group. She joined “Dr. Squeez and the HUGZ” with Michael DeWall seven years ago.

Steve Cohn - Bass. Growing up in New York City, Steve studied guitar and played in his first band, “The Corvairs,” at age fifteen. Since coming to the Bay Area, Steve has played bass in blues and jazz bands up and down Northern California, including Freeway Frank and the Hotwires, L’Chaim Klezmer Band, and The Gypsy Moths. 

Oscar Velasco - Vocals, Guitar. Oscar learned to play the guitar at age 6 in El Salvador. In the 80’s he played guitar and sang with the Latin-American group “Voces y Notas” and In 1991 he joined the group “Talticpac” playing pre-hispanic instruments mixed with modern instruments. After relocating to North Carolina in 1999 he joined the seven piece latin band “Camaleón.
