Latin Jazz with the Primavera Latin Jazz Band
Primavera Latin Jazz Band formed in Berkeley in the Spring of 2009 and for more than 15 years has performed at venues throughout the Bay Area*. Primavera Band is dedicated to uniting the most exciting rhythmical patterns coming out of Africa and arriving in the Caribbean islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico; and indigenous rhythms from South American countries including Brazil and Peru, that resulted in a cultural exchange between classical European and folkloric music. Primavera Band fuses these rhythms and styles with the harmonic structures of North American jazz to create a spontaneous improvisational fusion with arrangements of folkloric and modern songs from the Americas, North and South.
In celebration of Cinco de Mayo and in the tradition of the Latin Jazz masters including Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, and Poncho Sanchez, Primavera Band will perform their own arrangements of Latin jazz favorites and Latin ballads featuring vocalist Ana Nitmar from Guatemala.
Musicians:
Jeff McNish (guitar)
Lena Johnson ( piano)
Paul Smith (bass)
Dave Casini (percussion)
