Description: By popular request we are walking up north this month! We hope to have a good attendance of Northtown neighborhood group members. Thank you to Marjorie, Mary and Sallie, who are familiar with the park and will be special walk leaders!
The core of the walk will be the lagoon loop, where we might see seabirds and other water fowl. Keller Beach (northern segment) with beautiful views across the Bay, and the historic ferry terminus and public fishing pier (southern segment) will be optional points for those wanting a slightly longer distance. Picnic benches are available for a brown bag afterwards.
The hike is in full sun, but there are nice shoreline breezes on the stroll. The average grade of this hike is level, and the surface is paved, with some packed gravel and dirt portions. Trails are more than 6 feet wide.
Transportation: Need a ride? Members can request a ride from Ashby Village for a volunteer driver who can join us. You may know someone from your neighborhood group, with whom you might carpool. Or, have a family member or other guest bring you, and join you on the walk. Members can also see who is registered for the walk (you must be logged into the website) and may find a ride that way, or through a posting on the new AV bulletin Board.
Where to meet: We will meet at the 1st parking lot after the tunnel. There will be a Miller/Knox Parking sign. Note that the map link on this post targets the largest, parking lot on Dornan (closest to the Golden State Railroad Museum) If you park there, you'll need to walk back to the 1st one! If you get to Brickyard Cove Rd. you have gone way too far! Please be prompt, allowing for driving and parking time!
What to bring: Binoculars if you have them, good hiking shoes or boots for the trails, layered clothing for variable weather, water, sun protection and windbreaker, snacks. Hiking poles are optional, but lots of us depend upon them for balance, stability, and an extra work out! Brown bag lunch for afterwards, if you like.
Directions: From 580 West in Richmond, exit at Canal Boulevard. Turn left (south) at the light onto Canal Boulevard and proceed for about 0.1 miles. Turn right onto Cutting Boulevard and proceed about 0.5 miles to the end. Turn left onto South Garrard Boulevard and continue south through the tunnel. After the tunnel, South Garrard Boulevard becomes Dornan Drive. Meet at the FIRST parking lot with the sign! NOTE: If you pass the railroad museum or get to Brickyard Cove Rd., you have gone too far!
