One hour Docent Tour or Self tour for more walk less talk!

When:  Thursday, May 29 10 AM for about 2 hours (brown bag lunch after)

Where
:
1550 Wildcat Canyon Rd, Berkeley is the navigational setting. The Garden is located at the intersection of Wildcat Canyon Road and South Park Drive.

Open to:
Members and Volunteers and their guests

Description and Accessibility:  Pets are not allowed. The Garden was built into a canyon in 1940, and much of it is on steep terrain with narrow paths. However, in recent years, the Garden staff has endeavored to create premium displays along fairly level or gently sloping paths. These displays can be reached by most wheelchairs, but it is still advisable to have a companion. Even paths that are level or that slope gently may have varying surfaces, some of which may be challenging to wheelchairs or walker - so again a walking buddy might be needed to accommodate walk pace and provide assistance.  Docents and Ashby Village recommend hiking stick or poles for everyone to be safe on slopes and inclines. The paths are narrow in some areas and there may be a few railroad tie steps.

Stay tuned to this page to see if we have enough docents for those wanting an hour tour.  Typically 8-10 per tour, and expect frequent stops along the way.   After the tour you can explore the visitor center or self explore until we all meet for lunch outside the visitor center.

Those of us who prefer to walk and explore at our own paces can do so in small groups. Brochures with maps should be available.

Where to Meet and Parking:: We will meet at the Visitor's Center inside the Gate, not in the parking lot

Park in the lot across the road, where public restrooms are available. Carpooling is always recommended! If the Garden’s parking lot is full, the only other nearby parking is along Anza View Road (the road west of the Garden’s perimeter and off of Wildcat Canyon Rd). Parking is only allowed on the side of the road against the lawn. People parking on Anzo View Road can enter the Garden through the  service gate (also on Anza View Road).

Both Anzo View and Wildcat Canyon Gates will be open.

More info: The Regional Parks Botanic Garden is a naturally beautiful and tranquil living museum of California native plants. Located within Tilden Park in the hills above Berkeley, California, this enchanting 10-acre garden is a sanctuary for many of the state’s rare and endangered plants and a place for visitors to wander among trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses from plant communities throughout the state. California embraces nearly 160,000 square miles – imagine those miles set in a garden that can be walked within a few hours – desert cacti, foothill wildflowers, and coastal redwoods. There are no formal or reservable picnic areas, but there are places to picnic informally in the Garden.  There are numerous benches and lawn areas around the Garden. All visitors must pack out their trash

What to bring
:
Good walking shoes, layered clothing for variable weather, water,  hat for sun protection. Walking poles are always a good option for uneven paths. Brown bag lunch or snack. Cell phones might be handy too, if there is reception!  Pets are not allowed.

Transportation: Members can request a volunteer ride from the Ashby Village office- 510-204-9200  who can also join us.  You may know someone from your neighborhood group, with whom you might carpool. Or, have a family member or other guest bring you, and join you on the walk. Members can also see who is registered for the walk (you must be logged into the website) and may find a ride that way, or through a posting on the new  AV  bulletin Board  forum.
