Joaquin Miller Park - Sunset Trail
Description: Let's walk off some of that Thanksgiving turkey! The Sunset Trail is a 2 mile out and back walk via The Big Meadow. Hiking poles are recommended. It is a mild incline trail, in general, with an initial moderate decline going and thus an incline coming back. It's a wide trail with some shade. Everyone is welcome to walk at their own pace and distance. We generally go an hour out and an hour back. Multiple side trails can offer more challenge. We will assess our needs as we meet up and, if we have available walk leaders, may be able to offer a challenging add - on for some.
This walk will be led by our new AV member Betsy Littell, who is a volunteer trail safety patrol person for the East Bay Regional Parks and Joaquin Miller Park. She has been happily learning her way around the parks since moving to Oakland in 2007.
Where to Meet: We will meet at the Ranger Station. Set your navigation to 3590 Sanburn Dr. Oakland. The parking lot is for both the Ranger Station and the Community Center. There are restrooms at the Ranger Station, and we will meet in front. There is also parking both on the road and in another big parking lot just past the Ranger Station. Be sure to lock your car and don't leave anything of value showing!
What to bring: Good walking shoes for the trails, layered clothing for variable weather, and water. Hiking poles are advised for stability in general. Bring your cell phone if you have one!
Directions:Set your nav to 3590 Sanborn Dr. Oakland. Basically it is Hwy. 13 to Joaquin Miller to Sanborn Dr. to the Ranger/Community Center Parking lot.
Transportation: Need a ride? Members can request a ride from the Ashby Village office- 510-204-9200. Or have your guest bring you, and join you on the walk.
