Description: The Stream Trail is a favorite "go to" hike for AV! It starts as a partially paved trail that winds through meadows with picnic areas before entering a magnificent forest with towering redwoods, arching bay trees, and lush ferns - which should provide some shelter from the heat. The trail becomes packed dirt, but still wide and with little elevation gain, following Redwood Creek. We will do an hour out and an hour back. There are several alternative trails, such as the Bridal trail, for hikers wanting a moderate challenge, if we have enough walk leaders. We will discuss the options before we head off to the woods! Restrooms are available along the Stream Trail.
While we each know our own walking ability and limitations, having a cell phone with us is always a good idea. Cell reception, however, is not always available on the trails. We strive to have walk leaders available and encourage walkers to always walk with others for safety.
Where to meet: We will meet in Redwood Regional Park at the “Redwood Gate”, 7867 Redwood Rd, Oakland, CA. This "GATE" is located off the north side of Redwood Road about 2.25 miles east of Skyline Blvd. Turn Left into the park here, and follow the entry road to its end at the Canyon Meadow Staging Area. Park here if you can. Please allow extra time (10 minutes?) to walk from your parking space to the Canyon Meadow Staging Area.
What to bring: Binoculars if you have them, good hiking shoes or boots for the trails, layered clothing for variable weather, water, windbreaker, snacks. Hiking poles are optional, but are always a good idea for balance on slopes and general stability
Directions: Take Hwy 13 south to the Redwood Road Exit. Turn left off the exit, and follow Redwood Road east, 2.25 miles past Skyline drive. Turn left into the “Redwood Gate”. Meet at the Canyon Meadow Staging Area at the end of the entry road.
Transportation: Members can request a ride from the AV office (please give advanced notice) or bring a guest who can drive you and join us on the walk. Members, once logged in, can see others who are coming and may organize a car pool.
