Music Appreciation: Listening Guide to Classical Music

For our classical music lovers – but not only…


Soprano Jumi Kim, designed a course for Ashby Village members interested in classical music that will feature a brief lecture accompanied by a description of the repertoire to be performed by Jumi or other guest artists. Every month she will present a different topic/composer.

: Frederic Chopin, the"Romantic Poet of the Piano"

Pianists Bukyung Shin and Hyunji Park will present a brief lecture and live performance of Chopin’s renowned piano music.



Biography of Jumi Kim, Soprano


Jumi Kim, soprano, has been a featured soloist at concerts, including Messiah with the Ball State Symphony Orchestra and in Hodie by Vaughn Williams with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. Her recent performances include, Mozart Requiem and Coronation Mass, and Vivaldi Gloria with Santa Ynez Master Chorale and Orchestra, Bach Church Cantata BWV51 and Bach Magnificat with Symphony of the Vines, Pergolesi Stabat Mater with Brillante Chamber Ensemble on the Central Coast. She also appeared as a guest artist at various concerts with Music Untold in Los Angeles and Washington D.C.


Ms. Kim joined Opera SLO in the role of high priestess for their 2014 production of Aida and returned to perform the role of Lola from Cavalleria Rusticana in 2015. During her studies she performed various operatic roles including Suzel in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Countess in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and Cio-Cio San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.


Ms. Kim taught at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo as a voice instructor for six years prior to moving to the Napa Valley area. She previously taught voice at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion and IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne). Ms. Kim received her doctoral degree in vocal performance from Ball State University, received her master’s from Indiana University, and her bachelor’s degree from Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, Korea. Biography of Bukyung Shin, piano


Bukyung Shin holds bachelor’s degree from Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea, master’s degrees in Piano and Vocal Accompanying from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, and received doctoral degree in collaborative piano from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her primary teachers were Rita Sloan, Eileen Cornett, Seth Knopp and Jungae Son.


She served as an assistant coach and a pianist for Peabody Opera Department and was chosen to perform at the graduation ceremony when she graduate Peabody Conservatory. During her doctoral degree, she played for the Maryland opera studio as a coach and a pianist. She has performed in master classes with renowned artists such as Marilyn Horne, Christoph Eschenbach, and Roger Vignoles.


Shin was the recipient of the Marc and Eva Stern Fellowship at Songfest, where she worked with Martin Katz, Graham Johnson, and Margo Garrett. She also attended Aspen Music Festival with the prestigious New Horizon Fellowship.


With a passion for teaching, Dr. Shin maintains a private piano studio and also serves as accompanist for John’s violin studio. She resides in Almaden Valley with her husband and two wonderful children Aiden and Emma.



Biography of Hyunji Park, piano


Hyunji Park, native of Seoul, Korea, holds a Graduate Performance Diploma in piano performance from Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She has over 20 years of professional musical experience as a soloist, collaborative performer, music educator, choir conductor, arranger and a director of music organizations.


As an active pianist, Hyunji has appeared as a soloist and a collaborative pianist in Seoul, Rome, the Opera House in Sydney, Baltimore-Washington D.C., the Herbst Theater and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and the Bay Area. She also has served communities by performing in numerous benefit concerts and coordinating music classes for special education at Younhee Paik’s Stuido for Art & Music in Oakland, CA. Ms. Park always projects missions through the music to get closer to the people who love music and healing the communities.


As an Educator, she worked as a music director of the 2015-2018 Sonata Contest of CCMTAC. Hyunji has a thriving Studio and her students are on the top lists of the major piano competitions in the Bay Area. Currently, she is a music director of Canaan KUMC and artistic director of Celeste Solo Ensemble.
