Science and Ideas Group Presents
The Dawn of the Intelligence Age

Presenter: Robert Todd

Given recent breakthroughs powering unprecedented progress in Artificial Intelligence, it’s difficult to discuss without sounding hyperbolic. Nevertheless, it appears we are living at the dawn of a monumental shift in human culture. In 1937 Allen Turing proposed the model for what became the first modern digital computer. Just thirteen years later, he predicted that machine intelligence would someday almost certainly outpace our own. That future is looming. This talk discusses the breakthroughs in AI that happened when we stopped trying to teach machines what we have learned, and started building machines that can learn for themselves. We’ll discuss the way machine intelligence is similar to and also very different from our own. We’ll look at the global race to build AGI (artificial general intelligence) and the people and institutions who are concerned that we are woefully unprepared to manage it.

Robert Todd, an innovator, educator, and tech executive has made significant contributions to the fields of education, technology, and organizational transformation. As a pioneer of E-learning in the late 1990s, Todd helped revolutionize the way people learn and acquire knowledge. His passion for leveraging technology to enhance learning and change behavior led him to leadership roles at organizations like DigitalThink, McKinsey & Company, and LinkedIn. Today, as an advisor, educator, and consultant, Todd focuses on applying lessons learned from three decades amplifying human intelligence to help individuals and organizations prepare for the emergence of machine intelligence.
